Dia del Amor y la Amistad

Colombians celebrate this on the third Saturday of September in some regions, but February 14 still brings roses, serenatas, and the aggressive marketing of every restaurant in the Zona Rosa. The real Colombian love language is bringing someone a tinto when they didn't ask for one.

Dhivehi Language Day

Dhivehi is the national language of the Maldives, spoken by roughly 350,000 people, and it is one of the most isolated languages in the world : belonging to the Indo-Aryan family but influenced by Arabic, Sinhala, Tamil, and Portuguese over centuries of trade and contact. The script, called Thaana, is written right-to-left and was invented in the 17th century during the Portuguese period, allegedly to keep communications secret from colonial administrators. Thaana has 24 letters: the first nine are derived from Arabic numerals, and the remaining are modified from Dhives Akuru, the older Maldivian script. The language has multiple dialects: Malé Bas (the standard), Addu Bas (southern, with significant lexical differences), Huvadhu Bas, and even a distinct dialect on Maliku (Minicoy) in India's Lakshadweep. The vocabulary reveals the Maldives' history as a crossroads: "foshi" (coconut) comes from Sanskrit, "maalu" (fish) from Dhivehi's Indo-Aryan roots, "bazunisa" (morning) from Arabic "fajr," and "kurusaa" (cross) from Portuguese "cruz." The language day celebrates this linguistic heritage with poetry readings, Thaana calligraphy exhibitions, and school competitions in essay writing.

Valentine's Day in the Maldives — World Calendar Day

Valentine's Day in the Maldives

The Maldives is one of the world's top honeymoon destinations, and Valentine's Day is big business at the resorts : overwater villas with rose petal baths, private beach dinners, couples' spa treatments, and underwater proposals at the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant. On local islands, Valentine's Day is more muted (dating is discreet in Maldivian culture, and public displays of affection are frowned upon), but young people exchange messages and small gifts. The contrast between the resort Valentine's (luxury, privacy, romance-as-commodity) and the local Valentine's (quiet, personal, romance-as-secret) is yet another instance of the two Maldives.
