Submarine Life Day

The Maldives' underwater ecosystem is one of the most biodiverse on the planet, and what tourists see snorkeling the reef is only the surface layer. Below the recreational dive limit, the Maldivian atolls drop into deep channels ("kandu") that connect the inner lagoons to the open ocean, and these channels are highways for pelagic species : oceanic mantas, whale sharks, silvertip sharks, dogtooth tuna, and sailfish. The submarine topography of the Maldives is dramatic: the atolls sit on underwater mountain ridges that rise from 2,000-meter depths, and the channels between atolls create powerful currents that bring nutrient-rich water up from the deep. These upwellings feed the entire food chain, from plankton to apex predators. The Maldives has 187 species of coral, 1,100 species of fish, 5 species of sea turtle, 21 species of whale and dolphin, and over 400 species of mollusk. The deep reefs (below 30 meters) are largely unexplored, and new species are still being discovered : including several species of fish and invertebrate found nowhere else on Earth. The submarine life of the Maldives is not just a tourist attraction; it is a living laboratory for marine biology, and the country's marine protected areas now cover over 15% of its territorial waters.
