Malé is one of the most motorized cities on Earth : with over 100,000 motorcycles and 15,000 cars crammed into 6 square kilometers. The noise, pollution, and congestion are legendary. Car-free Day is observed by closing the main road (Boduthakurufaanu Magu) to motorized traffic for 24 hours, allowing pedestrians, cyclists, and children to use the street freely. The day is part of a broader effort to address Malé's air quality issues and to promote sustainable transport, including the expansion of the city bus system and the construction of cycling lanes on the reclaimed land of Hulhumalé.
