Children's Day

A socialist holiday, observed with school events and the reminder that 30% of Lao children are stunted due to malnutrition. The day is both celebration and call to action, and the government uses it to promote child health and education.

Hari Gawai

The Gawai Dayak is the harvest festival of the Dayak people of Sarawak, and it is celebrated on June 1-2. The festival includes the offering of sacrificial animals, the drinking of tuak (rice wine), the playing of the sape (a lute-like instrument), and the wearing of traditional Dayak costumes (the men wear feathers and beads, the women wear silver and beads). The longhouse is the center of the celebration, and the entire community gathers for the feast. The tuak is served in a glass, and the tradition is to drink until the glass is empty and then refill it. The Gawai is a celebration of the harvest, and it is the most important Dayak festival of the year.
