The anniversary of the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963, when Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore (which left in 1965) merged to form the Federation of Malaysia. The day is observed with ceremonies, and the reminder that Malaysia is a federation of 13 states and 3 federal territories, and that the inclusion of Sabah and Sarawak was conditional on their autonomy and special rights. The day is both celebration and reminder that the federation is still evolving.
