The anniversary of Malaysia's independence from Britain on August 31, 1957. The celebration includes a military parade at Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur, the raising of the Jalur Gemilang (the national flag), and the singing of the Negaraku (the national anthem). The parade is the largest in the country, and the crowd fills the square. The day is both celebration and reflection, because the independence was achieved through negotiation, not war, and the Merdeka (freedom) is a source of national pride.
