Youth Day
Observed across Malawi with events focused on children's rights, education, and health. Malawi has one of the youngest populations in the world : over 50% of the population is under 18 : and the day is a reminder of both the promise and the challenge of Malawi's demographic profile. Schools hold assemblies, NGOs organize health campaigns, and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Community Development issues statements about child marriage, child labor, and access to education. The day commemorates the 1976 Soweto uprising in South Africa, but in Malawi, it is also about the children who work in the tobacco fields and the girls who are pulled out of school to marry.
