Regional/Cultural Day
Chaka Chatsopano
The Malawian new year begins with church services, family gatherings, and the traditional meal of nsima with chambo from Lake Malawi. Houses are cleaned from top to bottom : a ritual of renewal that extends to settling debts and forgiving grudges. In Lilongwe's old town, families attend overnight services at Pentecostal churches that run past midnight with tambourines and Chichewa hymns. In the lakeshore villages, the new year is greeted with the sound of drums from the night before, and the first meal of the year is always nsima with whatever relish the lake has provided. The phrase "Chaka chatsopano!" echoes across the country, and the hope : always : is for a better year than the last.
