Kulamba Ceremony
The Kulamba ceremony is the annual gathering of the Chewa people, held at the Mkaika Royal Village in Zambia's Eastern Province (the Chewa straddle the Malawi-Zambia border). The ceremony brings together Chewa chiefs from Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique, and it includes the Gule Wamkulu dance, royal processions, and the paying of tribute to the Kalonga Gawa Undi, the paramount chief of the Chewa. The Kulamba is the largest gathering of the Chewa people, and it is a celebration of unity, identity, and the enduring power of the Nyau tradition. The ceremony has been held for centuries, and it is one of the few occasions when the Nyau dancers from different regions perform together. . 2026: Apr 5. 2027: Mar 28.
