Dia de la Mujer

Women's Day

Malawian women march through the streets of Lilongwe and Blantyre with signs demanding equal rights, an end to gender-based violence, and the right to own land and inherit property. The statistics are grim: 42% of Malawian girls are married before 18, maternal mortality remains among the highest in the world, and women own less than 20% of the land despite doing 70% of the agricultural labor. The march is both celebration and demand. In the villages, women gather under mango trees to discuss their rights, and in the cities, activists use the day to push for legislative reform. The women of Malawi are the backbone of the economy, and this day is their platform.
