Madagascar is one of the 17 megadiverse countries on earth, and the environment day is observed with particular urgency. The island has 100+ species of lemur, 6 species of baobab (out of 9 worldwide), thousands of endemic plant species, and the tsingy (stone forests) that are found nowhere else on earth. The events include guided tours of national parks, lectures by malagasy scientists, and the planting of endemic trees. The lemurs are the flagship species, and the ring-tailed lemur, the indri, and the aye-aye are the most famous residents of the island.
