Beierchen — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Beierchen

The evening before National Day, the students of the University of Luxembourg and the youth organizations carry torches through the streets of Luxembourg City, from the Place d'Armes to the Grand Ducal Palace. The torches are real (fire and all), and the procession is one of the most atmospheric events of the year. The students march in silence, the torches flicker in the dark, and the effect is medieval. The procession ends at the Place de la Constitution, where the fireworks are launched over the Petrusse Valley. The combination of the torches, the fireworks, and the medieval fortress creates a scene that is uniquely Luxembourgish.

Nationalfeierdag — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Nationalfeierdag

The Grand Duke's Official Birthday, and the most important national holiday in Luxembourg. The celebration begins on the evening of June 22nd with a torchlit procession (the Beierchen) through the streets of Luxembourg City, followed by a fireworks display over the Adolphe Bridge. On June 23rd, there is a military parade, a Te Deum in the cathedral, and a 101-gun salute. The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess appear on the balcony of the palace, and the crowd cheers "Vive le Grand-Duc!" The entire country celebrates, and the population (650,000) increases by 200,000 for the day, as the cross-border workers stay for the party. Luxembourg is the last remaining grand duchy in the world, and National Day is a celebration of this unique status. The Grand Duke's birthday is actually in April, but the celebration was moved to June for better weather.
