Dia de Reyes

Kids leave their shoes out the night before and wake up hoping for a gift from the Reyes Magos. The panaderias sell roscon de reyes, the ring-shaped sweet bread with a plastic baby hidden inside. Whoever finds the baby hosts the next gathering, though everyone forgets by February.

Draikinneksdag

The end of the Christmas season, and the day when the Three Kings are celebrated with church services and the singing of "De Sterre" (the Star). The tradition is to write "20+C+M+B+26" above the door with chalk, and the initials stand for the Three Kings (Caspar, Melchior, Balthazar) and the blessing "Christus Mansionem Benedicat" (Christ bless this house). The Galette des Rois (king cake) is shared, and the person who finds the hidden figurine becomes king or queen for the day. Luxembourg's Catholic traditions are deeply embedded in daily life, as the country is 70% Catholic, and the Three Kings mark the official end of a Christmas season that began with Kleeschen on December 6.
