JoninÄ—s

The day after Rasos, and the continuation of the midsummer celebration. The day is named after John the Baptist (Jonas in Lithuanian), and every man named Jonas celebrates his name day. Jonas is one of the most common Lithuanian names, and the JoninÄ—s celebration is the biggest party of the year. The traditions include floating flower wreaths on the river (if the wreath floats, you will marry; if it sinks, you will not), searching for the fern flower, and jumping over the bonfire for luck.

Rasos

/ JoninÄ—s (St. John's Day / Midsummer). The most important Lithuanian holiday after Christmas and Easter, and the celebration of the summer solstice. The tradition is to light bonfires, weave flower wreaths, search for the fern flower (the mythical bloom of the fern that brings wisdom and wealth), and jump over the bonfire. The name "Rasos" means "dew," and the tradition is to wash your face in the morning dew, which is said to bring beauty and health. The celebration takes place in the countryside, the bonfires are lit at sunset, and the dancing continues until dawn.
