Knygnešiai Day
Not a holiday, but a day to honor the knygnešiai (book smugglers) who carried Lithuanian-language books across the border from East Prussia during the 40-year Russian ban (1864-1904). The book smugglers risked imprisonment, exile, and death to bring Lithuanian books to their people, and they are national heroes. The most famous knygnešiai is Jurgis Bielinis, who smuggled over 40,000 books and was called the "King of the Book Smugglers." The day is a reminder that the Lithuanian language survived because ordinary people risked their lives to preserve it. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.
