Lietuvos Spaudos Diena

The anniversary of the lifting of the ban on the Lithuanian language press in 1904. The ban was imposed by the Russian Empire in 1864, and for 40 years, it was illegal to publish books, newspapers, or any printed material in Lithuanian using the Latin alphabet. The Lithuanians responded by smuggling books from across the border (the knygnešiai, or "book carriers," are national heroes), and the ban was lifted in 1904. The day is a reminder that the Lithuanian language survived 40 years of suppression, and the knygnešiai are the reason.
