St. Luzia

The feast of St. Lucy, the patron saint of light and vision, is observed in Liechtenstein with the traditional Luzia procession: a girl wearing a crown of candles leads a procession through the dark streets, singing the Luzia song. The tradition is particularly strong in the Walser community of Triesenberg, where the long Alpine winter makes the promise of light especially meaningful. St. Lucy's Day also marks the beginning of the Rauhnächte : the wild nights between Christmas and Epiphany, when the spirits are said to roam the Alps. In Liechtenstein, the Rauhnächte are observed with incense (Räuchern), when the head of the household goes from room to room burning herbs to purify the house for the coming year.
