World Common Cup Day

A day for tea, coffee, water, juice, and the conversations that begin when someone offers another person a drink.

St. Martin — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

St. Martin

The feast of St. Martin of Tours is observed with a traditional meal of goose (Martinsgans), red cabbage, and Knöpfle (Liechtenstein dumplings). In the villages, children carry lanterns (Laternelaufen) in a procession through the dark streets, and the bakeries sell Weckmänner (sweet bread figures). In Triesenberg, the Walser community (descendants of medieval settlers from the Valais region of Switzerland) observes St. Martin's Day with a special Walser church service in the Walser dialect, one of the few occasions when the dialect is spoken publicly. The Walser settled in the Triesenberg area in the 13th century, and their dialect and customs are a distinct cultural tradition within the principality.
