Tag der Deutschen Einheit Beobachtung

Not a Liechtenstein holiday, but a day of quiet reflection in a German-speaking principality. Liechtenstein shares its language, culture, and much of its history with its larger neighbors, but it has never been part of Germany or Austria (though it was part of the Holy Roman Empire until 1806 and the German Confederation until 1866). The day is a reminder of Liechtenstein's unique position : a German-speaking microstate that chose independence over integration, and that has maintained its sovereignty since 1719. The triple crown on the national coat of arms (representing the County of Vaduz, the County of Schellenberg, and the Principality of Liechtenstein) symbolizes this independence.
