The longest day of the year is observed with bonfires on the mountains, particularly in the Triesenberg and Malbun areas. The solstice fires are an ancient tradition in the Alps, predating Christianity, and they mark the turning point of the year : after the solstice, the days begin to shorten. In Liechtenstein, the solstice is also the start of the brief but intense Alpine summer, when the meadows above Malbun burst into wildflower bloom and the vineyards along the Rhine Valley begin to ripen.
