St. David's Day Observance
Not a Liechtenstein holiday, but in the tiny world of stamp collecting, March 1 is significant: it is the day Liechtenstein traditionally releases its first stamp issue of the year. The stamp release is a national event, covered by the media and anticipated by collectors worldwide. The stamps are designed by local artists, engraved by master craftsmen, and printed in Vaduz. The first issue of 1912 featured Prince Franz Josef I, and the tradition has continued for over a century : each stamp is a tiny ambassador for the principality, carrying its image to every corner of the world.
