Regional/Cultural Day
Neujahr
The new year in the Principality of Liechtenstein begins with church services, family gatherings, and the traditional meal of raclette : melted cheese scraped over boiled potatoes, pickled onions, and cornichons. The principality is tiny (only 25km long, 160 square kilometers, 38,000 people), and the celebration is intimate. The fireworks are in Vaduz, and because the country is so small, the entire population can see them from their windows. The Prince delivers a televised New Year's address from Schloss Vaduz, the castle perched above the capital that serves as the royal residence. Liechtenstein is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world (Uzbekistan is the other), and the new year arrives on Alpine time : quiet, orderly, and cold.
