St. Nicholas (Samichlaus) visits the children on December 6th, and the tradition is to leave a boot outside the door on the night of December 5th. In the morning, the boot is filled with oranges, nuts, and chocolate (if the child was good) or a switch (if the child was bad). St. Nicholas is accompanied by Schmutzli (a dark-clad helper who carries the switches), and the tradition is both reward and warning. In Liechtenstein, Samichlaus and Schmutzli arrive by donkey, not sleigh, and they visit every village in the principality : it takes only a few hours to cover the entire country.
You discover that the British Indian Ocean Territory is home to hawksbill sea turtles, manta rays, and numerous seabird species including frigatebirds and boobies. You observe that residents primarily keep cats and dogs as pets, with occasional ornamental fish. ACADA celebrates the world's pets, and helps assure better care.
