Not a public holiday, but a significant date in Liechtenstein's political calendar. On August 6, 2004, Prince Hans-Adam II transferred the day-to-day governance of the principality to his son, Hereditary Prince Alois, while retaining the title of Head of State. The event was remarkable because Prince Hans-Adam II had also championed a 2003 constitutional referendum that gave the Prince the power to veto laws, dismiss the government, and call referendums : making Liechtenstein's monarchy one of the most powerful in Europe. The Prince's veto power is real: in 2011, Prince Hans-Adam II threatened to veto a referendum on abortion rights, and in 2012, Hereditary Prince Alois vetoed a referendum on the decriminalization of homosexuality. The principality may be tiny (25km long, 38,000 people), but its prince wields more political power than any other European monarch.
