Alpaufzug
The Alpaufzug is the annual event when the cows are driven up from the valley to the Alpine pastures for the summer. The cows are decorated with flowers and enormous bells (the bells can be heard from kilometers away), and the herders wear traditional embroidered vests and hats. In Liechtenstein, the ascent follows ancient paths from the Rhine Valley up to the Malbun and Steg pastures. The event is celebrated with a village festival in the morning before the drive, with schnapps, cheese, and bread. The tradition marks the beginning of the Alpine summer and the brief season of high pastures that defines the agricultural rhythm of the principality.
