Regional/Cultural Day
Dreikönigstag
The day the Three Kings arrive, and the Christmas season officially ends. Children dress up as the Three Kings and go door-to-door singing carols (Sternsingen), collecting money for charity. The tradition is to write "20+C+M+B+26" (the year and the initials of the Kings : Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar) above the door with chalk. The initials also stand for "Christus Mansionem Benedicat" (Christ bless this house). In Liechtenstein's Catholic tradition (80% of the population is Catholic), the chalk blessing is taken seriously, and the doorways in Vaduz and Schaan bear the inscription well into spring.
