Looking Back at 1800 Day

Youm al-Thawra al-Fateh
The anniversary of the 1969 coup that brought Gaddafi to power. Under Gaddafi, this was the biggest holiday of the year, with military parades, speeches, and the Green Flag of the Jamahiriya. After the 2011 revolution, the holiday was abolished, and September 1st is now a day of controversy: some Libyans remember the 1969 coup as the beginning of 42 years of dictatorship, while others remember the social programs, the free education, and the oil wealth that Gaddafi distributed. The day is not a public holiday, but it is not forgotten.
