A day for sinking in, putting your feet up, reading something good, and the simple pleasure of resting properly.
A day commemorating the Libyan resistance to Italian colonization (1911-1947), one of the fiercest and longest anti-colonial struggles in Africa. The resistance was led by Omar Mukhtar (the "Lion of the Desert"), a Senussi teacher who organized the guerrilla campaign against the Italian army for over 20 years. Omar Mukhtar was captured and hanged in 1931, and his last words ("From God we come, and to God we return") became a rallying cry. The day is observed with the recitation of Omar Mukhtar's poetry, the screening of the film "The Lion of the Desert" (starring Anthony Quinn), and the remembrance of the 100,000 Libyans who died in the Italian concentration camps.
The day honoring the martyrs of the 2011 revolution and all Libyans who have died for freedom. The day is observed with ceremonies at the martyrs' memorials, the laying of flowers, and the reading of the names of the fallen. The number of martyrs is estimated at 10,000 to 25,000, and every Libyan family knows someone who died in the revolution.
