Libya produces some of the finest honey in North Africa, and the honey from the Jabal Nafusa and the Jebel Akhdar is particularly prized. The honey is made from wildflowers (especially thyme and rosemary), and it is dark, rich, and intensely flavored. The day celebrates the beekeepers, the honey, and the tradition of serving honey with dates and butter at every important gathering. The Libyan honey is used in cooking (especially in zabadia and other sweets), in medicine (honey and ginger for colds), and in cosmetics (honey and olive oil for the skin).
