The anniversary of the proclamation of Libyan independence on December 24, 1951, observed in some communities on the earlier date of November 12, when the UN General Assembly first voted to create an independent Libya in 1949. King Idris I declared independence, and Libya became the first country in North Africa to gain independence from colonial rule. The day is observed with official ceremonies, the flying of the flag, and the celebration of the monarchy period (1951-1969), which is remembered as a time of relative peace and prosperity.
