Youm al-Shajara

A day for planting trees and raising awareness about desertification in Libya, where the Sahara encroaches on arable land every year. The date was established during the Gaddafi era and continues to be observed, particularly in the northern coastal cities where olive and date palm groves are maintained. Schoolchildren plant seedlings, and the Ministry of Agriculture distributes olive and fig saplings. The date palm, which sustains life in the oasis towns, is the most celebrated tree.
