Youm al-Kutub

A day celebrating Libyan literature, from the poetry of the pre-Islantic period to the novels of the modern diaspora. Libya has a rich literary tradition: the ancient inscriptions of the Acacus, the medieval manuscripts of the Senussi zawiyas, the poetry of Ahmad al-Sharif al-Senussi, and the novels of Ibrahim al-Koni (who writes about the desert and the Tuareg), Ahmad al-Faqih (who writes about Tripoli), and Hisham Matar (who writes about exile and loss). The day includes book fairs, poetry readings, and the celebration of the Libyan dialect, which is distinct from the Egyptian and Tunisian dialects.
