Armed Forces Day
The day honoring the Armed Forces of Liberia, which were demobilized after the civil war (1989-2003) and rebuilt from scratch with American assistance. The day is observed with military ceremonies at the Barclay Training Center in Monrovia, and the reminder that the Liberian military is now a professional force that has contributed troops to UN peacekeeping missions in Mali and Somalia. The transformation from a force that was used to oppress civilians to a force that protects them is the story of Liberia's recovery. The parade includes a march past the Executive Mansion, and the president reviews the troops.
