Diphalafala is the traditional Basotho stilt dance, performed by men who walk on tall wooden stilts while wearing grass skirts and animal skins. The stilts can be up to two meters high, and the dancers perform acrobatic feats while balanced on the poles. The dance originated as a form of entertainment and as a way of crossing flooded rivers during the rainy season. Today, diphalafala is performed at celebrations and festivals, and the dancers compete for the highest stunts and the most elaborate costumes. The dancers move in formation, stamping their stilts in rhythm, and the sound of wood on earth echoes through the valleys.
