The Kome rock dwellings are a remarkable example of Basotho architecture and engineering. Built in the 1830s by Chief Teleki, the dwellings are carved into the sandstone cliffs of the Kome Valley, and they have been continuously inhabited for nearly 200 years. The houses are made of sandstone blocks with thatched roofs, and they are built into the overhangs of the cliff face, providing natural shelter from rain and wind. The dwellings are a testament to Basotho ingenuity: they used the natural landscape to create homes that are cool in summer and warm in winter. On this day, the descendants of Chief Teleki welcome visitors and share the history of the dwellings.
