Selemo sa Lehloa

Lesotho is the coldest country in Africa, and the winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night. The temperatures in the highlands can drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius, and the snow blankets the mountains from May to September. The Basotho gather around their fires, wrap themselves in their blankets, and tell stories of the old days. The herding boys in the mountains huddle in their stone huts, and the livestock are brought into the kraals for warmth. The solstice is a reminder that Lesotho is the only country in the world where every point of land is above 1,000 meters, and the cold is the price of living in the sky.
