The herding boys (balesibi) are the shepherds of the Kingdom in the Sky. They spend months in the mountains, tending their flocks of sheep and goats, sleeping in stone huts, and living on papa and dried meat. The boys, some as young as eight, are responsible for the safety of the flock, and they must protect the animals from jackals, baboons, and the freezing cold of the highland winters. The homecoming is when the boys return to their villages for a visit, and the community gathers to welcome them with a feast. The boys bring cheese, butter, and wool from the highlands, and the village gives them papa, moroho, and the comfort of human company. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.

The children of the mountains are the most resilient children in Africa. They walk for hours to reach school, they herd their flocks in sub-zero temperatures, and they play in landscapes that would challenge the most experienced mountaineer. This day celebrates the mountain children and their unique way of life. The events include mountain races, stick fighting (a traditional Basotho martial art), storytelling, and the traditional game of morabaraba (a board game similar to checkers). The children wear their blankets and their mokorotlo hats, and they compete for prizes of blankets, hats, and school supplies. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.
