The Kome rock dwellings are a remarkable example of Basotho architecture and engineering. Built in the 1830s by Chief Teleki, the dwellings are carved into the sandstone cliffs of the Kome Valley, and they have been continuously inhabited for nearly 200 years. The houses are made of sandstone blocks with thatched roofs, and they are built into the overhangs of the cliff face, providing natural shelter from rain and wind. The dwellings are a testament to Basotho ingenuity: they used the natural landscape to create homes that are cool in summer and warm in winter. On this day, the descendants of Chief Teleki welcome visitors and share the history of the dwellings.
A day for the entrance that tells visitors someone cares about this place.
A practical celebration of the list that saves the day, even when one item is remembered only after reaching the door.
You encounter the endangered Djibouti francolin and the Somali wild ass in Djibouti's arid landscapes. You most commonly see domestic cats, goats, and camels kept by residents in this Horn of Africa nation. ACADA celebrates the world's pets, and helps assure better care.
You celebrate the local rum production of Saint Martin, where distilleries like Rhum Clement (though Martinique-based, widely available here) define Caribbean spirits culture. You recognize how rum represents the island's colonial history and its transformation into a modern economy built on tourism and trade.
