The Jāņu siers (Midsummer cheese) is a caraway cheese that is made only for Līgo and Jāņi. The cheese is made from cottage cheese, eggs, butter, and caraway seeds, and it is served with fresh bread and beer. The caraway represents the sun, and the cheese represents the earth. The combination is the taste of the Latvian summer, and it is not sold at any other time of year.
The most important Latvian holiday, and the night when the boundaries between the human and natural worlds are thinnest. The Līgo celebration includes bonfires (to ward off evil spirits), wreath weaving (oak for men, flowers for women), cheese eating (the caraway cheese Jāņu siers is mandatory), beer drinking (the Līgo beer is special), and the singing of Līgo songs (dainas) that are over 1,000 years old. The celebration takes place in the countryside, the bonfires are lit at sunset, and the dancing continues until dawn. The fern is said to bloom at midnight on Līgo, and the person who finds the fern flower will gain wisdom, wealth, and the ability to understand animal speech.
A day for remembering the bag before leaving, then remembering what was supposed to go in it.
A day for reminders, photos, jokes, plans, corrections, and the tiny negotiations that keep families coordinated.
