Jāņi — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Jāņi

The day after Līgo, named after John the Baptist (Jānis in Latvian). The celebration is the same as Līgo: bonfires, cheese, beer, songs, and the search for the fern flower. The Jāņi celebration is the oldest and most important holiday in the Latvian calendar, and it predates Christianity by thousands of years. The church tried to Christianize it (by naming it after John the Baptist), but the Latvians kept the bonfires, the wreaths, and the fern. The fern flower has never been found, but the search continues every year.
