The anniversary of the 1991 Barricades, when Latvians built barricades around the parliament and key buildings in Riga to protect them from Soviet tanks. Five people were killed, and the barricades held. The day is observed with candle-lighting at the barricade sites, and the candles burn in the snow as a reminder that independence was defended with human lives.
