Lāčplēsis Day
The anniversary of the 1919 battle against the West Russian Volunteer Army (Bermontians) at Riga. The day is named after Lāčplēsis (the Bear-Slayer), the hero of the Latvian national epic, who was a man with the ears of a bear who fought against the German knights. The day is observed with military ceremonies, the lighting of candles at the Freedom Monument, and the laying of flowers at the graves of the fallen. Lāčplēsis is the symbol of Latvian resistance, and his name is on the Order of Lāčplēsis (the highest military decoration).
