Dia de Reyes

Pathet Lao Day

The anniversary of the founding of the Pathet Lao (the Lao communist movement) in 1950. The day is observed with official ceremonies, and the history is complex: the Pathet Lao fought the Royal Lao Government in a civil war that was part of the larger Vietnam War. The Pathet Lao won, and the Lao People's Democratic Republic was proclaimed on December 2, 1975. The day is a reminder that Laos is one of the few remaining communist states, and the past is still present.
