Mother's Day in Kuwait and across the Arab world is March 21, and the celebration is proportional to the status of the mother in Kuwaiti society: she is the center of the family, the head of the household, and the final authority on all matters of importance. The gifts are jewelry, perfume, and the traditional phone call from every child. The restaurants are fully booked, and the flower shops sell out. In the diwaniya, the men will joke that Mother's Day is the only day of the year when they are allowed to be in charge of the kitchen, and the joke is only half in jest.
