Kuwait National Day Car Parade

The car parade on the Gulf Road is the most exuberant expression of Kuwaiti patriotism, and it takes place every year on the evening of February 25. Thousands of cars, decorated with Kuwaiti flags, lights, and spray paint, crawl along the Gulf Road from Salmiya to the Kuwait Towers, and the passengers spray each other with water guns, silly string, and foam. The traffic is gridlock, the noise is deafening, and the joy is infectious. The parade is a uniquely Kuwaiti tradition, and it is the closest thing the country has to a carnival. The young Kuwaitis spend days decorating their cars, and the competition for the most creative decoration is fierce. . 2026: Feb 17. 2027: Feb 9.

Youm al-Watani

The anniversary of Kuwait's independence from Britain in 1961. Kuwait was a British protectorate from 1899 to 1961, and the end of the protectorate was negotiated by Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, who is regarded as the father of modern Kuwait. The celebration is the biggest event of the year: fireworks over the Kuwait Towers, car parades on the Gulf Road, and the national colors (green, white, red, and black) on every building, car, and face. Young Kuwaitis spray each other with water guns and silly string on the Gulf Road, and the traffic is gridlock from Salmiya to Jahra. The celebration is loud, joyful, and entirely unrestrained. The Kuwait Towers, the iconic water towers that are the symbol of Kuwait, are lit in the national colors and visible from across the city.
