Regional/Cultural Day

Mahrajan al-Dhakira

A cultural event organized by the Kuwaiti National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters to commemorate the oral history of Kuwait. Elders from the older neighborhoods (Sharq, Mirqab, and Dasman) gather to tell stories of pre-oil Kuwait: the water carriers (qashshash), the date merchants, the pearl merchants (tawawish), and the dhow captains (nokhatha). The stories are recorded and archived at the Centre for Research and Studies on Kuwait. The festival is a quiet act of preservation in a country that has been transformed beyond recognition by oil wealth, and it serves as a reminder that Kuwait was once a small fishing village on the edge of a harsh desert.
