Hala February Festival Start

The opening of Kuwait's annual Hala February festival, a month-long shopping and entertainment extravaganza that takes its name from the Arabic word for "welcome." The festival was launched in 1998 to boost tourism and retail spending during the cooler winter months, and it has since become one of the largest festivals in the Gulf. The Avenues Mall, the largest shopping center in the Middle East, hosts concerts by Arab pop stars, fireworks displays over the Kuwait Bay, and massive sales that draw shoppers from across the GCC. The festival is a celebration of consumption, but it is also a celebration of Kuwait's openness to the world.

National Day Preparations

The two weeks before National Day (February 25) are a period of intense preparation and celebration in Kuwait. The streets are decorated with the national colors (green, white, red, and black), the buildings are lit with lights, and the Kuwait Towers are illuminated in spectacular fashion. The Hala February festival is in full swing, with concerts, fireworks, and massive sales at the malls. The young Kuwaitis prepare their cars for the Gulf Road parade, decorating them with flags and lights, and the traffic is gridlock from Salmiya to Jahra. The atmosphere is exuberant and patriotic, and the celebration is a release of the national energy that has been building since Liberation Day.
