Kuwaiti Flag Day

The day commemorating the adoption of the Kuwaiti flag in 1961, when Kuwait gained independence from Britain. The flag (green, white, red, and black) is the same as the pan-Arab colors, and it is flown from every building, every car, and every lamppost on National Day and Liberation Day. The flag is a symbol of Kuwaiti identity, and the colors represent the fertility of the land (green), the purity of the people (white), the blood of the martyrs (red), and the dark days of the occupation (black). The day is observed with flag-raising ceremonies at schools and government buildings, and the flag is treated with the reverence that comes from a country that lost its flag during the occupation and had to raise it again.

Youm al-Kuwait al-Ma'raka

The anniversary of the Battle of Jahra in 1920, where Kuwaiti forces led by Sheikh Salim Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah repelled an attack by the Ikhwan (a Wahhabi militia from Najd). The battle is a defining moment in Kuwaiti history, and the Red Palace (Qasr al-Ahmar) in Jahra, where the Kuwaiti forces took shelter, is a national monument. The battle is remembered as proof that Kuwait has always been willing to fight for its independence, and the veterans of the battle are honored as the predecessors of the Kuwaiti resistance of 1990. The day is not a public holiday but is observed by the Kuwaiti military and the historical society.
