World Calendar Day

Ramadan

In Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, Ramadan transforms the country. The pre-dawn meal (sahur) is eaten at 3 AM, the fast lasts until sunset, and the breaking of the fast (buka puasa) is a communal event. In Jakarta, the Ramadan markets (Pasar Ramadhan) sell kolak (banana and coconut compote), es buah (fruit ice), and dates by the kilogram. The traffic at 5 PM is the worst of the year, because everyone is rushing home to break the fast, and the patience is the best of the year, because everyone is hungry. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.

Harees Season

Harees is the comfort food of Kuwait, a porridge of wheat and meat (usually lamb or chicken) cooked overnight in a tannur oven and served with ghee and cinnamon. The dish is associated with Ramadan, Eid, and the winter months, and it is the first thing served at the iftar table during Ramadan. The preparation of harees is a communal activity: the women of the neighborhood gather to pound the wheat, season the meat, and tend the ovens, and the dish is distributed to the poor as well as to family and friends. The word "harees" comes from the Arabic word for "to mash," and the texture should be smooth and velvety, the result of hours of slow cooking. In the old days, the harees was cooked in the communal tannur, and every neighborhood had its own tannur keeper. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.

Laylat al-Qadr

The holiest night of Ramadan, believed to be the night when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. In Kuwait, the mosques are full, the prayers are long, and the faithful believe that worship on this night is worth a thousand months of prayer. The night is observed in the last ten days of Ramadan, and the exact date is unknown (it is traditionally observed on the 27th, but the Prophet Muhammad said to seek it on the odd nights of the last ten days). The Kuwaiti tradition is to spend the last ten days of Ramadan in itikaf (seclusion in the mosque), and the Grand Mosque in Kuwait City is filled with worshippers who sleep, pray, and read the Quran through the night. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.

Luqaimat Season

Luqaimat are sweet dumplings that are a beloved dessert in Kuwait and across the Gulf. The dumplings are made from a batter of flour, yeast, sugar, and cardamom, deep-fried until golden and crisp, and then drizzled with dibas (date syrup) or honey. The name comes from the Arabic word for "bite-sized," and the dumplings are meant to be eaten in one bite. Luqaimat are served at every celebration: Eid, Ramadan, weddings, and national day. They are the Kuwaiti equivalent of the doughnut, and every family has its own recipe. The best luqaimat are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the dibas should be thick enough to coat the dumpling without soaking it. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.
