Youm al-Huquq

Kuwait observes the UN International Human Rights Day with particular resonance, as the Iraqi occupation of 1990 was a massive violation of human rights that remains the defining trauma of modern Kuwait. The Kuwaiti constitution guarantees freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion, but human rights organizations have criticized Kuwait for the kafala system, the treatment of stateless residents (the Bedoon, who number over 100,000), and the criminalization of same-sex relations. The day is marked by conferences, press releases, and the reminder that Kuwait's own experience of occupation gives it a special obligation to defend human rights.
